MCDOA members celebrate Jules Malec’s birthday

10 Feb 2024 - Yesterday lunchtime, MCDOA past-President Colin Welborn, co-founding past-Chairman David Sandiford, co-founding Vice Chairman & Webmaster Rob Hoole (Yours Truly), past-Vice Chairman Jon Riches and fellow MCDOA members Kev Giles, Geoff Goodwin and Martyn Holloway gathered in the upstairs room of the Townhouse in the historic market town of Petersfield in Hampshire for a convivial celebration of the 83rd birthday of Cdr Julian ‘Jules’ Malec OBE RN which actually occurred on 2 February. There were at least three conversations going on at any one time and the red wine & venison pie went down a treat, as did the accompanying beer.

Jules joined the Royal Navy in 1963 and qualified as an MCDO at HMS VERNON in January 1970. His seagoing appointments included 1st Lt of the Ton class minehunter HMS IVESTON circa 1971/72 and CO of HMS BRERETON circa 1979. He was appointed an OBE in the 1991 New Year Honours and left the Royal Navy in 1993.

Many thanks to Colin Welborn for organising such an enjoyable event and for his generosity in picking up the tab.

Many happy returns of the day, Jules!
